Toddler Science: Birds of North America Flash Cards (Video & Printables)

“One of the things you can do with a small investment of time that is especially easy, especially agreeable, esepcially valuable, and especially rewarding is to teach your tiny child about nature. For him to know fifty common birds, fifty trees, fifty flowers, fifty shrubs, fifty animals, fifty insects, and fifty snakes will give him a lifetime of pleasure. It will also bring him a good dose of resepct from his peers at ages five, fifteen, fifty and seventy because very few people know the creatures and plants that fill the state in which they live. It is more than strange that schools rarely teach nature study. Most First Class Scouts and all Eagle Scouts tend to know more about nature than do most college professors. Another advantage is that in teaching your child the nature Bit of Intelligence cards you will even learn some of them yourself and get to enjoy the world around you a great deal more.”

– Glenn Doman, How to Give Your Baby Encyclopedic Knowledge

I have begun making animal (biology) flash cards for my toddler (age two) and have been having a lot of fun with it!

When my oldest son was a toddler and I first heard about the Doman Encyclopedic Knowledge program, I was really excited about the possibilities.

Learning about biology and animals seemed like it was going to be extra great. How fun would it be to teach my little one to recognize different species of frogs, butterflies, spiders, felines, you name it? The world was going to be our oyster and I couldn’t wait to get started.

I ended up being very disappointed after months of frustration in actually trying to find any kind of decent quality pictures to use for our program. It wasn’t nearly as easy as I thought it would be, and without investing an arm and a leg in expensive nature books, it proved to be close to impossible.

That was in 2008, and things have changed a lot since then.

The internet, and most importantly Wikipedia (as all photos on Wikipedia can be reused freely in my educational materials), is now full of easily searchable, beautiful, high-quality photographs. Wikipedia may not be a great reference when citing a research paper, but it sure is great for free photos!

I am starting my youngest son’s biology collection with bird species. We’re beginning with the family Anatidae, which is composed of ducks, geese, and swans.

Can’t wait to learn about so many different species of birds and, eventually, many other animals too!
